How to create an acrylic painting on canvas

Finally, I use Liquitex Heavy Body Cadmium-Free Red Medium over the crimson and some of the remaining white areas to add a lovely burst of intense color to the composition.

The paintings offered by ADM are created by hand, an aspect that enhances their artistic value. Created by selected artists, the paintings are made by a team of experienced copyist painters who add an artisan value to the artworks. The motifs are hand-painted on canvas using acrylic paint, which enhances the colours, giving the surface of the works a 3D effect.

Some paintings are embellished by fine decorative materials such as metal, wood, glass, paper, resin, glitter and others.

Fixed on a wooden frame, the painted canvas covers the entire surface of the work without leaving the sides uncovered. The paintings are immediately ready to be wall-mounted without using frames. In addition, as a proof of the craftsmanship and commitment of ADM’s artisans, each painting is sold with its own certificate of craftsmanship.

Are you looking for the perfect painting to decorate the walls of your home? ADM’s paintings on gallery-grade canvas are unique, as they are made entirely by hand by our artists. The paintings in ADM’s catalogue are made by hand, and when sold they include a certificate proving their craftsmanship. Among ADM’s innovative proposals there are the glass effect paintings made by our artists using an ancient technique. Acrylic paints are similar to tempera, except that the pigments are acrylic and give the final result greater brightness and gloss. In addition to blending well together, acrylic paints have the ability to dry quickly and easily. Once dry, acrylic paints stabilise and maintain their integrity over time, making the artwork bright and free of yellowing. ADM’s team of painters use acrylic paints to create paintings with gallery-grade canvas because they do not flake off when dried. To be usable, acrylic paints must be mixed with each other. To use the acrylic painting technique, you only need the basic paints, the primary colours, black and white: with a little experience and the use of the primary colours, you can create all the others. Acrylic paints can also be diluted with water to delay their drying and increase workability. Through the use of acrylic paints, our artists can create different effects:

  • glossy
  • matt
  • transparent
  • covering
  • striped

Acrylic paint can be used to create veiled or shaded effects with a tendency towards transparency, but also in more dense compounds. Transparent acrylic techniques can be used, by thinning the colours with water and then applying an additional layer of colour to create greater depth. ADM’s painters are familiar with acrylic painting techniques; the fast drying of the colour requires a speed of application that only experts can guarantee. The processing time of acrylic artwork is shorter because of the fast drying time, which makes the paintings even more valuable, raising their artisan value.

ADM’s team of copyist painters creates acrylic paintings on gallery-grade canvas, also in a modern key, but also prints on gallery-grade canvas, ideal for decorating rooms with a touch of innovation and inspiration. In the ADM’s catalogue of paintings on gallery-grade canvas, the choice can be made by:

          Supplies

I use acrylic paints because they dry much faster than oil paints, which is ideal when doing a layering process because I don’t have to wait very long to add the next layer.

For starters, I’d recommend Liquitex Basics Acrylic, which is less pigmented than artist-grade paints but much more affordable. https://www.liquitex.com/us/products/basics/range/colors/

If you have deep pockets, you can buy highly-pigmented artist-grade paints from brands such as Liquitex, Golden, and Winsor & Newton.

I mostly use Liquitex as I particularly like their Heavy Body paints, which retain their shape more than soft-body paints.

          Canvas

I buy deep-edge canvases in sizes 25 cm sq and 60 cm sq (used in this painting).

If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend buying a pack of canvas boards — these are much cheaper than stretched canvases on a frame and allow you to practice your skills.

          Painting Utensils

I use palette knives in all of my paintings to add interest by scraping paint over rough layers of paint.

Check this link for more on the types of palette knives and some painting techniques you can learn: https://drawpaintacademy.com/palette-knife-painting/

          What You’ll Need

          • 10”x10” Canvas
          • *Ready to Pour Paints or regular acrylic paints like Liquitex Paints or Amsterdam Paints
          • *Liquitex Pouring Medium or Vivid Enamel
          • *4 Small cups for mixing your paints
          • 10 oz. cup
          • Painter’s triangles (to lift the canvas)
          • Disposable gloves
          • Plastic table cover or large cookie tray to catch paint drips
          • Stirring sticks
          • Frog tape

*If you plan on using Ready to Pour Paints, then you do not need to get the small cups for mixing your paints or the pouring medium.

          How to Pour:

          1. Cover the back of your canvas with frog tape.
          2. To protect your painting area, cover your work area with plastic or simply use a large cookie tray.
          3. Place the painter’s triangles on the plastic or cookie tray and set your canvas right on top of them.
          4. Put on disposable gloves.
          5. Add about 1/2 oz of different acrylic paints into separate cups, add 1 1/2 oz of pouring medium into each cup, and mix. If your paint consistency is still too thick, add a little bit of water to each paint mix until you get the desired fluidity.

Below is a quick example (from CBC Arts) that shows the steps mentioned previously and the beautiful marbling pattern that you can create with fluid painting!

Here are a few extra pointers to help you achieve the best marbling results.

          1. If you are a beginner, do not use complementary colors, otherwise you will most likely get a muddy pour.
          2. Choose white as one of your color choices. White will help create a brighter and more balanced marbled pour.
          3. If you did not get enough marbling, you can pour some thin lines of paint over your previously poured paint and again tilt the canvas so that those lines stretch a little bit more.
