Mastering the art of painting fire with acrylics

By Gunjan Tripathi S.H. Raza is probably one of the most well-recognised names in the visual arts landscape. Known to be one of the most legendary Indian artists, this master needs no introduction. His desire to seek deeper meaning, to find a visual language that could retain, resonate and radiate universal truths that he believed in, gave birth to the majestic and iconic geometric patterns that we are familiar with today.
S.H. Raza was born in Madhya Pradesh, India but spent most of his early adult life, including his period of art training in Paris, France. However, it was his Indian roots that helped him find his true artistic style. Visits to Ajanta Caves along with an extensive study of ancient Indian texts led him to the find expression in a small circular form called “bindu” which he believed was the central point of energy for the creation and progression of all life forms. Raza has been awarded the highest citizenship awards, has broken art auction records and remains to this date one of the most well- recognised names in the art community. He along with F.N. Souza, M.F. Hussain, K.H. Ara and others formed the Bombay Progressive Artist Group, which completely changed the Indian art landscape. Raza is known to be the flag bearer of modern abstract art in India. Let us revisit his masterpieces through these 10 artworks. 1. Panchtatva S.H. Raza Represents the key natural elements – sky or space, air, water, fire and earth, this powerful work combines the 5 greatest universal truths symbolically on canvas. 2. Earth A tribute to Mother Earth and her power to sustain life, this artwork is definitely a masterpiece of geometric abstraction. 3. Bindu S.H. Raza’s iconic Bindu is a journey to the core, representing the dark womb, the centre of the universe and the source of all matter. 4. Fire Blazing through the canvas is one of the key natural elements, the destroyer or fire, that cleanses and allows for a fresh start. As powerful as its significance, there is an unique beauty that radiated through this particular work. 5. Untitled This untitled work is a classic example of S.H. Raza’s trademark balance of geometry, bold colours and profound philosophical insight. 6. L-inconnu A break from his popular geometric compositions, this artwork carries forward his vibrant colour palette. 7. Immanence Raza has infused lines from Mahatma Gandhi in this iconic artwork bringing together two great leaders. 8. Kundalini A wonderful depiction of the synergy in form and energy through geometric composition. 9. Bindu Another masterpiece from his famed “Bindu Series”. 10. Asto Maa Asto Maa reflects Raza’s inclination towards Indian thought and philosophy and perhaps an expression of his humility to the vastness of mother nature.

TITLE: Great Balls of Fire ARTIST: Thomas Marshall Carnell Critics Review: “Great Balls of Fire” is a stunning acrylic painting on board that beautifully captures Rafael Nadal’s passion and intensity for the game of tennis. The painting is a masterpiece of art that evokes a strong emotional response from the viewer. The continuous rows of rotating tennis balls that change color to create the image of Nadal are not only visually striking but also represent the relentless pursuit and never-say-die attitude that is characteristic of the tennis legend. The use of fiery orange and red in the background of the painting perfectly complements the theme of the artwork, as it represents the fire and intensity of Nadal’s play. The vibrant colors and the dynamic composition of the painting make it stand out and create a powerful impression on the viewer. The level of detail in the painting is impressive, with the artist paying close attention to capturing the intricate details of each rotating tennis ball within the Nadal figure. The way the artist has used color and light to create depth and dimension is also noteworthy. “Great Balls of Fire” is a remarkable work of art that effectively captures the essence of Rafael Nadal’s playing style and personality. The painting is visually stunning and emotionally charged, making it a must-see for any art lover or tennis enthusiast. The artist has done an excellent job in bringing the subject matter to life, and the end result is a painting that truly captures the spirit of the game.

We all have a responsibility to be our own “Dean of Lifelong Personal Learning.” Heading into 4th quarter, I always like to check on how I am progressing against my own strategy for continuing education. As you approach the challenge of structuring your personal syllabus, I wanted to share a few practical traits, behaviors and habits that have worked well for me throughout the years. — 5 Simple Tactics to Support Lifelong Learning: 1) Plan: Set specific goals and establish a weekly or monthly routine that represents the aggregate of your learning-based strategies. Then find specific and repeatable moments in your day to reserve time for this focus. For me, it happens when I first wake up and right before I go to bed. ▪️ How much time do you set aside for learning-based activities in your week, month and year? ▪️ What are the subjects you wish to pursue? ▪️ Is your learning objective breadth or depth? ▪️ What strategies will you apply against your specific goals? 2) Read, Network, Experience, Teach: Use the full gamut of technology and opportunities for knowledge ingestion to push your learning in a deliberate fashion consistent with your stated learning goals. ▪️ Read for pleasure and currency, but always have at least one non-fiction complement on any topic that can push your learning goals. ▪️ Seek out experts for their wisdom and insight. ▪️ Attend seminars and classes consistent with your stated objectives. ▪️ Teach a topic to others that might further their development to foster depth, application and confidence for yourself. 3) Record and refine: Keep daily notes capturing concepts raised in meetings or interactions that you do not fully understand or grasp. Prior to putting your head on the pillow at night, browse the internet for reference material or articles that provide context and background on the topics. Use this exploration process and investment of time to actively calibrate and inform your overall plan for learning. 4) Question: Force yourself to be curious and get out of your comfort zone. ▪️ Seek new experiences to see what might spark an interest. ▪️ Find non-traditional and different perspectives/sources that go beyond your known beliefs and views to stretch your frame of reference. ▪️ Ask others you respect what currently has their attention, interest and curiosity. 5) Compare: Find the shining role model, friend or co-worker that demonstrates a depth of understanding or insight on some aspect of your learning goal that impresses. Analyze how they accomplished their proficiency and adopt some of their approaches and actions into your own learning plan. I’m interested in your role models and successful approaches to effectively deliver on your responsibility to be your own Dean of Lifelong Personal Learning. What has worked well for you?
