DIY Canvas Art For Kids
DIY Art for kids can be fun but not necessarily something you want to hang in your home forever. If you are looking for some canvas art that kids can make themselves but will also look super cute hanging on a wall, try this DIY canvas art for kids!
How do you make DIY canvas art for kids? First, mark off a letter using masking tape. Then, have your child paint over the canvas and tape. Finally, remove the tape to reveal a monogram letter.
DIY Canvas Art For Kids
I’ve been searching for an art project for my kids that I can hang in their room. This winter, we moved the girls into not only the same room, but the same bed. They now share a full size bed and absolutely love it. The transition to move Jane out of crib into not just a bed, but a bed shared with her sister went smoother than planned. (Although, shortly after the move, she was jumping on the bed after lights out, which resulted in her breaking both bones in her left arm…but that’s another story for another day.) Anyway, I’ve been wanting to hang a fun art project above their bed but have been so indecisive. I was going to hang letters, but then decided it would be fun for the girls to create something themselves to hang above their heads. So, this is what we came up with!
- Canvases
- Masking Tape or Painters Tape
- Acrylic Paint
- Paint Brushes
Instructions For How To Make Canvas Art For Kids
1. Use Masking tape to mark off a letter.
I found 2 canvases for 1/2 price at Michaels and snagged them up. Then, I used masking tape to mask out an “L” for Lula and a “J” for Jane. I was a little worried it might not work, but I couldn’t find any painters tape at home and just went for it with the masking tape…which ended up being fine!
2. Next, have your child paint over the canvas with acrylic paint.
Next, I got out some acrylic paint and large paint brushes for the girls. Here are some tips to help out your kid turn that canvas into something pretty and not a brown mess. Give them only ONE COLOR at a time. For the first color, I chose pink and mixed it with some water so that they would end up covering most of the canvas with it.
Another tip is to keep rotating the canvas for them. Kids tend to paint in just one spot and not cover the whole surface. By turning it every few minutes, they will cover more. When, I was ready for the next color, I actually dried their canvases for a few minutes with a hair dryer. This keeps them from just over mixing and creating brown. I dried the canvas a bit after each color until we were done!
You can experiment with mixing some paint with water and using large brushes and keeping other colors of paint thick with small brushes. This will create a more varied effect.
Just have them paint all over the canvas, masking tape and all! Encourage them to make shapes and lines. It’s ok to guide or direct your child when making art, this will help them be more successful! And it will prevent you from being tempted just to grab their brush and do it for them.
3. Peel off the tape before it’s dry and then it dry completely.
And you are done with your adorable art project!
I think they turned out so pretty and the girls love that they made it themselves!
This art project would also be cute on heavy paper and in white frames!

Family Photo Frame on the Canvas Itself
Mixing together art and craft, this one can be extremely cute to have in the house. Use a pencil to sketch out squares on the canvas. Glue icecream sticks along the outlines of the squares and then either paint them black to hold a photo or let your child draw his sketches of mom and dad and the family in each of the squares.
A noticeboard is important at home just as it is in your office. Let your kid choose a bunch of coloured papers of his choice. Then paint the entire canvas in black and let it dry. Now you can keep the stack of coloured papers next to it and put them up on the board using push pins to write anything that you want to remember.
Abstract Modern Art with Duct Tape
With buttons and pompoms, there’s space for some minimalism to exist on the canvas, too. Using simple pieces of duct tape to create a multitude of patterns on a black canvas can allow your kid to focus on other aspects of shape and symmetry, beyond the typical colours and patterns.
Finding small stones or a very sharp stick can act as a brush too. By using one end of the stone or stick dipped in paint, and tap it repeatedly on the canvas. This can be used to create interesting patterns or geometrical shapes or to fill sketched drawings that might have been made earlier.
Hands have Fingers for a Reason
Yes! Not only will your kid have a gala time in messing up the entire place, and their hands and their clothes, the paintings they make will have their personal touch, quite literally. Let them make fingerprints, palm paintings, or write their names with their very own fingers and watch them smile in delight.
A sheet of bubble wrap is all it takes for this one. Take out paint in a larger tray, lay down the sheet, and then let your kid put the sheet on the canvas in all ways possible. And even if he does get bored, he can always spend time popping the bubble wrap.
Canvas painting ideas for preschoolers, kindergarten and all kids are aplenty and each of them helps unleash their creativity in an interesting way. Keeping things clean and letting them express their heart is a good way to keep them engaged as well as build new ideas in their heads.
