5 Egg Painting Ideas for Easter

What you’ll need

How to Make

Bubble Painted Eggs

How about trying the fun technique of bubble painting to decorate your ceramic eggs this year? Taking just dish soap, pastel coloured paint and a straw, you can create amazing Easter ornaments that can be used year after year.
To make your own bubble painted ceramic eggs here’s what to do:
Step 1: Mix 1/4 cup of water with a generous squirt of paint and washing up liquid.
Step 2: Mix using your straw and start blowing to create bubbles.
Step 3: Take your ceramic egg and dip it into the overflowing bubbles you’ve created. Leave to dry and repeat.

String Art Eggs

Make perfectly pastel-coloured crackled eggs to hang and display using this fun string art technique.
Here’s how to make your own string art egg decorations:
Step 1: Tightly wrap wool around your ceramic eggs. Use glue dots to secure the two ends of wool to the egg.
Step 2: Using a mini sponge paint dabber apply your chosen paint.
Step 3: Unravel the wool to reveal your design.

Tissue Paper Eggs

Give your eggs a different texture with this very simple but effective decorative technique.
To make tissue paper eggs here’s what to do:
Step 1: Brush your plastic egg with glue and cover with a layer of tissue paper. Three small tissue circles are needed for each egg.
Step 2: Once dry paint in your chosen paint colour and then apply a second coat to get an opaque finish.
Step 3: You can then paint on your desired pattern using a paintbrush or even a cotton bud.
Look at how we used these painted tissue paper eggs in a recent Easter Wreath project.

Personalised Eggs

Ceramic decorations are the perfect blank canvas for getting creative and what’s cuter than an Easter Egg with your name on it? Using pastel porcelain paint and ribbon you can create beautiful 3D hanging decorations or even Easter Sunday lunch placenames for the table.

String Wrapped Eggs

This intricate decorative technique is a fantastic way to add new life to plastic eggs. Using string, simply wrap the egg and add your very own unique designs.
Here’s how to make string wrapped egg decorations:
Step 1: Wrap doubled sided tape around the egg.
Step 2: Holding the egg in one hand, now begin to wrap the string from the top of the egg until the entire surface is covered.
Step 3: Sponge paint the string using a mini sponge paint dabber.
Step 4: Now take more string, roughly 20 – 30 cm in length, and begin to glue onto the egg in small circles or curvy lines.

Homemade Easter Cards & Painting Activities

We’ve had a pretty busy afternoon in our house! My children LOVE painting but they get bored easily of painting the same thing. To combat this, I always make sure I have 4 or 5 different activities to do in any one painting session. If not, 20 minutes of setting it all up is wasted when they’re bored 10 minutes later!

Homemade Easter Cards & Painting Activities

Variety is the key to beating boredom!

Today we had some fab Hobbycraft letters and shapes to paint (£1 each! Bargain!) Easter cards for the grandparents (one religious and one not), Bunny footprints for me to keep, cookie cutter printing and finally some templates of eggs for them to draw and paint on. Phew…. And all of this entertained them for a good hour! I don’t mind the mess and paint and glitter everywhere if they’ve actually sat and painted for a decent amount of time! It’s soul destroying when you set up a load of paint or crafts and they lose interest minutes later!

Homemade Easter Cards & Painting Activities

Whatever type of Easter, Spring break or half term you’re having, I’m sure there are some painting ideas here that could keep your little ones entertained and give you some lovely keepsakes too. Give them a good mix of child-led and adult-directed tasks in order to keep their attention. I do this mostly to avoid the inevitable arm painting/ fighting/ boredom that normally ensues when I just leave them to it. I gave them some free reign decorating their own eggs and printing with cookie cutters and then some templates and direction when it came to making the cards for the grandparents. Try this next time you do some painting and I guarantee it will keep their focus for a lot longer. Each activity probably lasted 5-10 minutes and then it was on to the next. At 2 and 5 that’s their attention span maximum for a craft activity.

Easter card ideas

Here are some simple Easter card ideas you can try:

  1. Carrot footprints – put orange paint on their foot and green on their toes. Print onto card and you have a carrot!
  2. Bunny footprint – cover their foot in white paint and print on black paper. Stick a small piece of cotton wool on for a tail and paint on some ears! I cut around mine and stuck it on pink paper to make it stand out.
  3. Egg painting – draw an outline of an egg and let them finger paint inside it or use dabbers. Mine actually wanted to use my sharpies instead but finger print dots on the eggs looks lovely!
  4. Finger print crosses – for a grandparent or relative who remembers the true meaning of Easter in the Christian calendar, a finger print cross on the hill looks very sweet and is thoughtful. I drew the hill and Noah used his finger to make the crosses and sunshine.

I hope you find something useful here to try! Dig those paints out to keep them entertained on a cold April day! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy: A selection of colours, different sized paintbrushes or sponges, some cookie cutters, paper and card… even glitter if you’re brave/ slightly mad! Have fun and embrace the mess!
